"Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, oh Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee

I was reading to a small group in the library corner and during this time the children and I could also hear music from another room playing softly in the background.
My initial thought about this music was that it sounded familiar and old. As I listened further I realised the music came from an old folk song called “Puff The Magic Dragon”.
The following day at our mat time Alice (teacher) began reading the book "Puff The Magic Dragon" and half way through the book Alice decided that we will sing the rest of the story.
When we got to the end of the book, some children called out “Do it again Alice”.
We all sang "Puff The Magic Dragon" again. At the end of the story some children shared that the story made them sad because Puff’s special friend was going away.
"Puff The Magic Dragon" might’ve been written some years ago. The message in the story is still relevant teaching and learning for our children today.
"Puff The magic dragon" teaches about friendship, gentleness, restfulness, peace, courage, strength, acceptance, enjoyment.
"Puff The magic dragon" will become another tool in which we will regularly apply in support of our positive guidance and social competence behaviour.
